Creative Europe Desk Greece informs you about the new open call launched by the Hamburg Ministry for Culture and Media, in cooperation with the Westwerk e.V. artists’ centre. This residency programme offers eight (8) three-month residential and work grants for the years 2027 and 2028, aiming to facilitate work on an artistic project and foster networking within the local cultural scene.
Venue and Target Audience
Westwerk is centrally located in inner-city Hamburg (Fleetinsel) and is a vibrant artists’ centre housing studios, galleries, and a small theatre.
The call is open to professional international solo artists, aged 23 or older, who reside outside Germany and work in the fields of visual arts and photography. Creators from film, multimedia, and music are eligible only if their work has a direct connection to the visual arts. Please note that this residency is not intended for curators, and applicants should already possess some experience abroad.
Benefits and Coverage
Selected artists will receive a comprehensive support package:

Rent-free accommodation: Provision of a 68 sqm furnished residency flat and studio space at Westwerk, equipped with WiFi.

Monthly allowance: An additional expense allowance of €900 per month per artist to cover living costs.

Travel expenses: Coverage for one return journey.

Final presentation subsidy: A one-off subsidy of €500 per residency towards the costs of running and organising a final presentation, lecture, or exhibition.
Note: Grant recipients are personally responsible for their own health and personal liability insurance, as well as any necessary visas or residence permits. Physical presence during the residency is mandatory. A no-smoking policy applies on the premises, and family members or pets are not permitted to live there.
Application Process and Deadline
Applications must be submitted exclusively online, in either English or German. The application platform opens on July 1, 2026, with a strict submission deadline of August 27, 2026, at 23:59 CET.
Required documents include an informal covering letter, a personal statement with a project outline, a tabular CV, and evidence of artistic work (max. 5MB, no external links). Applicants must also specify their preferred three-month slots across 2027 and 2028. A knowledgeable jury will evaluate the submissions, and the selection will be announced by mid-October 2026. Due to the large volume of applications, no rejection emails will be sent out.
